A- A large comfortable well-equipped computer lab with web access and training resources (EDC - 4th floor).

6- Can you provide us with few sample examples of some of the projects offered from industry or university in this program?
There are various opportunity for every one accepted. The following projects are just examples. Skill set preferred and detailed projects will be sent to you later

Example 1- Science: Creating “movies” for the Global Microscope using conventional video editing tools, such as Windows Movie Maker and Adobe After Effects. These movies would be converted into spherical coordinates with software that we already have, and displayed at the Liberty Science Center.

Example 2- Math and IT: Students will discuss ideas they would like to test concerning various aspects of baseball, especially as they relate to the dynamics of scoring runs and its influence on likelihood of winning games. Students may revise and/or run a computer code that contains much of the logic involved so they do not need to reinvent the process and then will attempt to test some of the hypotheses the group has suggested. An interest in baseball is a plus! If the work is of good quality, possible recognition by having name on presentations or publications.

Example 3- Biomedical Engineering: - Testing a new device to help measure finger joint angle without touching the hand, using lasers and a camera. - Constructing a little device to translate rotational movements of the Wiimote remote controller into something that a person with a hand disability could operate - Helping to measure and understand vibration of a platform we plan to use to shake up people.

Example 4- Web Design & Development and Research Integrate open source technologies on to an existing web application. Additionally, the intern may be given very specific research topics that he is responsible for conducting.

Example 5- Business Responsibilities (such as administration, marketing, finance and project management)

And much more!
7- How about safety and supervision?

The EDC building provides multi-level security advanced system 24/7 from parking to reception. No one is allowed into the multi-door closed building without proper identification and an escort. NJIT is policed 24/7 with security officers with non-stop patrols. NJIT is a safe and very friendly community.

Additionally we will provide:

1- Work experience sponsors and their assistants will be directly responsible for their interns.

2- Our staff members will also be with the students all the time in central office, central lab and in all activities. Our staff will escort students all time to ensure safety and guidance. This includes checking in and checking out.

3- My senior assistant (Kathy) and myself will manage, monitor and mentor program activities during the three assigned days each week. This is in addition to other activities.

4- My senior level college capstone teams will assist the students in their project work as technical advisors and subject matter experts.

8- What other activities will be included in addition to the work experience opportunities?

The evolving design of the work experience program will ultimately include various additional activities in the central office and at NJIT for all participating interns such as:

A- Training on advanced presentations skills, team work, communication skills, professionalism, project management and leadership, web design and internet technologies, business ethics, essential IT software and tools, etc.

B- Educational tours and trips to CBS, Liberty Science Center, companies and various university colleges, labs and departments.

C- On -site movies, games and ice breakers

D- Leisure time at the Gym, Bowling and other university game room activities after work. We also may arrange some fun trips to museums, water parks, beach or theme parks during non working days.

E- The possibility of a special free summer camp from August 1st – August 3rd at NJIT which is free only for internship program participants.

9- Is there any other forms the intern or the parent need to complete and sign?

Yes. You and your parent will be required to complete and sign some official forms on July 2nd or prior to participation. This is a procedural (but important and required) process that usually takes very little time.

10- Is there any other benefits for the interns – including payments?

- Many of the sponsoring companies or university departments may limit their support to the intern to offering a unique learning experience, projects, feedback, supervision, mentorship, training, advisement and exceptional resources. They will also co-sign our internship program special certificates and will be happy to write recommendation letters for good work.

- Some sponsors may also offer lunch and transportation support.

- Few sponsors may offer stipends or pay checks this summer after successful completion of the work experience month.
I will get all sponsors responses about these details by June 15th and this will be part of their demos in our important showcase on July 2nd .
Since this program is the preliminary phase of what is expected to be an NSF- grant-funded Connections program by the end of 2007, there is no available grant budget for this program this summer at this time. In Summer 2008, we may be able to make direct payments to the students from the grants as stipends – in addition to company stipends – if agreed. However and through our capstone sponsors and partnerships, some of our students’ activities may get sponsored by these companies at no cost to students.

11- Is there any help in transportation?

Since our students come from every where in NJ, it is almost impossible to arrange official support in transportation. However, with parents help, students who live in the same areas can use car pools and exchange help –we have at least 4 students from Mount Olive High School. I can help whenever possible in Mount Olive area. Some students have cars and the EDC has a large parking lot adjacent to the building in addition to the huge parking deck at NJIT. Some students may prefer other means of public transportation. The subway stops at NJIT and just next to EDC building. When we meet in our showcase on Jan 2nd, we will also explore together other ways in collaborating in transportation.
